OK. So you found me. And I found you. Two short guys in a world that can be pretty, darn frustrating. I am going to help you create your vision of you. This is a critical, mandatory exercise for any short guy(SG) following this blog.
Your vision of you (VOY) is something you will carry in your heart and mind for the rest of your life. On your dying day you will high five me after you hug your family members and say goodbye. This is important. Don’t skip this step.
You will often look around and feel slighted because you are short. It sucks standing next to a 6′ 4″ dude who may have half your skills or intelligence and watch him soak in praise and attention…for simply being tall. You can’t complain. And it would only make you seem weak.
So here is the new vision of you in simple terms. If you want success, girls, and happiness…you must create this vision. It’s what you think of when you hit that brick wall – where somehow – you feel your height is the issue. It won’t be for long!
1. Martin Luther King: Whenever feel that sinking feeling, I want you to close your eyes and think —Martin Luther King over and over again. Who was the most influential and amazing human being in the last century? It was Martin Luther King and he was short. He was 5’7″ just like me and he changed the world because he had a higher vision of what he could contribute to this world. We’ll explore how he did this throughout this blog but for now – take a deep breath and think only of this amazing man. Study him, listen to his speeches, get inside his head. Picture him up in front of a million people giving a speech. The world stopped for this man. You are him. And he achieved more than anyone you will probably ever meet – large or small. Women found him immensely attractive although that was not the focus of his life.
2. Smile for Your Coming Success: No matter how pissed off you feel – even if your bullied by some big, dumb jocks — you now possess an indomitable spirit. In your private thoughts you can feel as bad as you want but your public face is now going to be a warm smile. Your smile is something you are going to practice in the mirror. You are not a whiner and billions of people are worse off than you. Look at Michael J. Fox – he’s got Parkinson’s and he’s 5’4″ and he’s not giving up…why should you? Your smile says, “I am confident and grateful. Heck, I am happy for these tall, good looking people but I know that I’m every bit as good as them. Every smile you give to the world will trigger a chemical reaction and you will feel better more confident, more charismatic, more eager to crack a joke versus sulk about something. Every smile must be combined with friendly, eye contact with someone in the room. In your vision of you — you are smiling — always smiling and radiating confidence.
3. Focus of Excellence: Within your life you must develop a focus of excellence. Something you do extremely well that defines you as you. In life it is said, that you must choose your race wisely – deciding to be an NBA Center would not be a great focus of excellence. Consider your strengths and weaknesses — what makes you exceptional? Are you fast, smart, savvy? Are you dedicated? What motivates you? I want you to really think this through…in your vision of you — you must remind yourself that you are the best at something. You see, many people look to height to define their value — why is that? In some cases, they are looking for an easy way to say, I achieved something…I landed a boyfriend who is 6′ 3″. Big deal I say! But when you think about it – that is a strange way to feel good about yourself. You my friend are going for something better, juicier, and ultimately more rewarding – real actual achievement in a particular area.
In conclusion, you must meld these three things together. Martin, Smile, Excellence. That’s your vision of you. That is what will warm your heart when you feel the sting of rejection or just wake up wishing you were taller. A man with a vision will appear to be at least a couple inches taller – he isn’t an egomaniac — he has a quiet vision that gives him internal strength. He is Mount Everest and you will be too. This isn’t the Short Guys Survival Guide – It’s the Short Guy’s Success Guide(SGSG)…and don’t you forget it.
